1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, Stems. S-142, B-32, R.5. VG8 NGC and EAC. In the Sheldon numbering scheme, this rare variety marks the first appearance of the Style II letters, which he described thusly in Penny Whimsy: "They are heavier, and all the serifs or endings and cross strokes at the top and bottom, are more solidly attached. The serif at the tip or toe of the L is prolonged almost halfway to the top of that letter, the serifs of B are longer and heavier, and the right foot of the upright of R almost touches the tail of the letter." The obverse of this marriage also features the last 7 in the date firmly embedded in the drapery. The date and upper reverse are weak on the present specimen, as often found, but it is struck on a pleasing and problem-free, medium-brown planchet. Almost certainly one of the top 20 examples of the variety, although not listed in the Census of Del Bland or that of Bill Noyes.
Ex: Ray Chatham (8/10/1959); Engelhardt; John A.
