1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, Stems. S-135, B-5, High R.3. MS63 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. Die State II. Benjamin Goodhue (1748-1814) of Salem, Massachusetts, was a merchant, a U.S. representative and senator, and a member of the first Continental Congress who drafted the bill for the formation of the District of Columbia. In December 1797 he bought a bag of as many as 1,000 Mint State cents directly from a bank or the Mint, passing them down to his daughters. In 1863 David Nichols, of Gallows Hill near Salem, disposed of those cents at or near face value, hence the name "Nichols Find" that has attached to the horde. The chief varieties found among the Nichols Find were the S-119 of 1796 and the S-123 and S-135 of 1797, all rarer in Fine condition than in Mint State. These historic Nichols Find varieties offer collectors the opportunity to acquire Mint State specimens that otherwise surely would not exist in such quantities. They are also a historical record of the first copper planchets bought from the Soho Mint near Birmingham, England, directed by Matthew Boulton.
The present lovely example of the S-135 is well centered, with full dentilation showing on both sides. The coin is a light milk chocolate-brown, with red highlights in the peripheries. The planchet shows light roughness in the center, with some parallel planchet striations on Liberty's neck. The reverse strike is weak at CENT. There are no significant marks or abrasions to quibble about. The planchet is lightly pinched, as made, at the rim above the B in LIBERTY, and oppositely below the 1 in the fraction. Two minute planchet pits in the left obverse field behind the ribbon, as made, will serve as future pedigree markers. A fine opportunity for the variety, date, or type collector to acquire an example of this beautiful and historically significant coin.
Ex: Dill (10/18/1969). Envelope Included.
