1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems--Double Struck in Collar--AU58 PCGS. S-139, R.1. A common variety, distinguished by the separation of the date from the bust and the engraver's scratch to the right of the fraction bar. What is not common is this piece's status as an early error. After striking, the coin rotated counterclockwise but did not leave the press, and so received a second impression. This is most evident at Liberty's hair, where she appears to have even more curls than usual, and at the upper left reverse, where an A from AMERICA floats in a void where OF should be. Only minor friction is evident on the highpoints, and this typically struck chocolate-brown example is well-preserved overall. The surfaces are generally smooth, though a pair of old, thin abrasions run vertically on Liberty's neck.
