1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, Stems--Double Struck--MS65 Brown NGC. S-135, R.3. Regardless of date, any Mint State Draped Bust large cent is important, and few are available from the earliest years. Thanks to the Nichols Find of 1796 and 1797 Draped Bust large cents, type collectors can strive to acquire a high quality piece. All three varieties, 1796 S-119, 1797 S-123, and this S-135 variety, are more plentiful in Mint State grades than they are in circulated grades. In fact, it is only through the Nichols Find that these varieties do not have an R.5 rating.
This example has an additional cache as it is fully double struck on both sides. The two strikes are closely overlapping, and yet it is far more than a mere double profile. Every detail is fully and obviously doubled, including the date, LIBERTY, the entire bust, and even the border on the obverse. The reverse is similarly doubled, including the entire wreath, all of the lettering, and the border. There appears approximately 1 mm. of space between each strike. Both sides have smooth and glossy medium brown color with traces of lighter tan, faded from original red. As suggested by the Gem grade assigned by NGC, the surfaces are essentially problem-free, with no evidence of wear on any part of the design. EAC 60.
