1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, No Stems. S-132, B-28, R.5. VF20 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. Die State II. In this die state a narrow rim break joins three dentils above IC on the reverse. Breen comments that this variety is "often banged up or even mutilated," so this attractive and rare coin with minimal distractions should fetch a nice premium. This example is struck on a dark-brown, slightly porous planchet. A couple of small obverse pits reveal themselves under a glass, and there is a reverse nick on the leftmost top leaf. The coin is nicely detailed for the grade, with about two-thirds of the obverse dentilation present. The reverse is weak at NE and OF A, but nearly all of the reverse dentilation is present. An appealing specimen, and another important opportunity for the variety specialist. Del Bland has graded this example Fine 15 and tied for sixth finest known, while Bill Noyes says VG10 and 12th finest known. A significant pedigree adds even more.
Ex: Judge Thomas L.
