1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, No Stems. S-143, B-31, Low R.5. Fine 12 NGC. VG8 EAC. Die State I. This obverse in the Sheldon numbering system features the premiere of the Style II letters, with a curved tail on the R among other characteristics. The 7 on this variety is embedded into the drapery, while the reverse hallmark is, of course, the lack of wreath stems. Faint clash marks aid in identifying the various die states. While it is possible this coin is from a later die state, the clash marks diagnostic of Die State I are visible at Liberty's throat. (There is no reverse die crack visible in the field near D, however; that area is weakly struck.) This example has numerous grade-consistent contact marks that may mask other die clashes. The strike is weak at the lower left obverse and the upper left reverse, but the coin is pleasingly detailed for the grade and struck on a medium-brown, slightly glossy planchet.
Ex: Chuck Furjanic (4/1978); Dr. Willard Carmel; Del Bland (1982). Envelope Included.
