1797<10C> 16 Stars. JR-1, R.4.--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Pearl gray toning on the high points changes to lilac-gray in the fields. Wisps and tinges of charcoal gray can be seen at the borders. The obverse die cracked early from the rim below Liberty's bust to through the tops of the date to the rim through the first two stars. All specimens known show this die crack to some degree. There is a dull scratch down Liberty's face, and a similar scratch crossing the eagle's neck into the right wing. The 16th star commemorates Tennessee's admission into the Union which occurred on June 1, 1796. Mint officials soon realized that if every new state received its own star, there would soon be little room left for other design elements, so soon thereafter the Mint returned to its custom of using just 13 stars, one for each of the original colonies that comprised the United States in 1776.
Ex:Olson (before 1986). Envelope Included.
