1797 10C 16 Stars--Bent, Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. XF
1797 10C 13 Stars--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. XF45 Details. JR-2, R.4. After Tennessee became the 16th state to join the Union on June 1, 1796, the fledgling Mint produced numerous dies with 16 stars, but at some point Mint Director Elias Boudinot apparently realized that the nation's coin designs could not continually add new stars for every new state. The die for this dime was likely produced after the Mint had standardized on 13 stars for the "Original 13" states.
Type collectors, take special note of this coin, a pleasing (ANACS caveats notwithstanding) example of the two-year Draped Bust, Small Eagle type. Neither of the ANACS provisos carries much weight or severity: The two crisscrossing pinscratches on the cheek are neither deep nor distracting, and despite a possible old cleaning, the coin's surfaces have retoned quite nicely into pretty pink-gray, silver-gold, and ice-blue hues. The piece shows the typical weakness on the eagle's breast, but otherwise there are no singular distractions. Seldom seen in Mint State.
Ex: Stack's 71st Anniversary Sale (10/2006), lot 2647.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
