1797 10C 13 Stars AU55 NGC. JR-2, R.4. The dimes of 17
1797<10C> 13 Stars AU55 NGC. JR-2, R.4. The dimes of 1797 have a misleading mintage of 25,261 pieces. While that many coins may actually have been delivered in the calendar year, it is generally believed that the first two warrants were for coins dated 1796. The last four warrants only total 15,017 coins, all presumably dated 1797. This information leads one to the inescapable conclusion that 1797 dimes are more than twice as scarce as 1796 coins. The 13 stars variety (one of only two for this year) was apparently struck after the Mint concluded that new stars could not be added each time a new state entered the Union. Tennessee was the last (16th) state to be so designated. The JR-2 is an absolute as well as a condition rarity. Only 20 coins have been certified by both of the major services in all grades. At the AU55 level, only three other pieces have been so graded by NGC with one finer. PCGS has certified two coins in this grade with two finer. This piece shows slight friction over the highpoints, and both sides show rich cobalt-blue and purple shadings of color. Just a bit of striking softness is seen over the devices, and there are no obvious abrasions on either side.
