1797 $10 Small Eagle AU55 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-7, R.5. A transitional date for the Capped Bust Rig
1797 $10 Small Eagle AU55 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-7, R.5. A transitional date for the Capped Bust Right Eagle series, 1797 witnessed the final delivery of Small Eagle examples as well as the initial delivery of Large Eagle coins. Survivors of the former type are seldom offered in even the largest auctions. In fact, 1797 is the rarest date in the Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle Ten Dollar series. Combined NGC and PCGS population data reports just 46 coins in all grades, a mere five of which are Mint State (1/03). Clearly, the 1797 was not preserved to the same extant as either the 1795 or the 1796. (As a first-year issue, the 1795 is much more available than the 1797. The 1796 is also scarce, but more examples have been certified by the major grading services.) This particular representative is one of only three Choice AU survivors that we have offered since the early 1990s, the last of which sold in 1998. Both sides are lightly rubbed with ample evidence of a prooflike finish remaining. There is pleasingly bold definition throughout, and crisp, well balanced denticles around the borders suggest a well centered impression. Both sides are green-gold in color with lighter medium gold hues evident at direct light angles. The scattered abrasions really do not include any obvious pedigree markers, but if we had to stretch for one, we would mention a shallow planchet void (as struck) in the reverse field below and after the F in OF. The often seen obverse die break (also as produced) is evident from the rim after star 16. A bidding opportunity of the utmost importance for early gold specialists, and one that is surely not soon to be repeated. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
