1797 $10 Large Eagle--Scratched--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6835, Taraszka-11, BD-3, R.5. There are three varieties of this date, and all share the same obverse. This variety is readily attributed by the eagle's short, thin neck, and by his lack of a tongue. Of the three die marriages, this is easily the scarcest, with a mere 40 to 50 pieces known. Well struck, the surfaces display khaki-gold color and a surprising degree of remaining luster. Either highpoint wear or striking incompleteness leave the eagle's breast feathers (between the motto and the shield) undefined. Wispy hairlines, pinscratches and adjustment marks are noted on each side of the piece, but a pair of heavier scratches on the obverse--one on Liberty's head left of the ear, the other in the upper left obverse field--result in the NCS disclaimer. A shiny area above the arrowheads on the reverse likewise reveals some scratchy tooling marks. These relatively minor impairments are unlikely to significantly reduce the value of such a scarce item, however.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
