1797<$10> Large Eagle MS63 NGC. Breen-6834. B.2-C, Taraszka 12, R.4. This is a remarkable example of this coveted date which displays a fair amount of mint bloom and seductive coppery-gold toning in areas. The strike is sharp and complete, with all definition remaining in the dies brought out to their full conclusion. The obverse die has been lapped to remove either die clashing or perhaps to lessen die cracks or die rust. The lapping is evident, as several stars on the left obverse are shallow and spindly. A few show traces of die rust on their points, as does the LIB of LIBERTY. The fields and surfaces are wonderfully clean for a delicate large gold coin of the period. Examination will find some minor scratches to the left and right of the date, and another crossing the upper right of the shield near the corner. A strong magnifier will discover the faintest evidence of adjustment marks, some on the upper reverse rim, others crossing the center of the horizontal shield lines. This evidence is virtually undetectable, and most numismatists would miss this feature. In terms of condition, this is one of the finest known of this issue, and well up in the Condition Census for the date. PCGS has graded three examples this high with none seen finer, and NGC has graded this coin and one other as MS63, with a single coin graded higher. For the connoisseur this coin would be a welcome addition to any advanced collection.
Research by Anthony J. Taraszka has determined that most of the 1797 Heraldic Eagle Reverse coins were actually struck after the 1798/7 eagles. This was determined by studying die states and the fact that one of the reverse dies was used to coin both 1798/7 and 1797 eagles. That reverse shows additional die cracks on the 1797 coins, proving they were struck after the 1798 pieces. Furthermore, the same obverse die was used to strike all three of the 1797 Heraldic Eagle varieties. The present coin is from the final state for the obverse and revers

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
