1797 $10 Large Eagle MS62 NGC. Breen-6835, Taraszka-11, BD-3, R.5. Just 40 to 50 examples are known of this die combination, the rarest 1797 eagle variety. John Dannreuther suggests that BD-3 is even rarer than the 1797 Small Eagle. Judging from the photo in Dannreuther's book, the only example that Harry Bass acquired will grade in the AU range. It is our opinion that the prooflike Mint State example offered here is the finest known of the variety, one of just two Mint State pieces currently recorded.
The 1797 Heraldic Eagle ten and 1798 overdate eagles were struck at the same time. Study of die state data leads to construction of an emission sequence for these coins, showing the order that they were actually struck: 1797 BD-1; 1797 BD-2; 1798/7 BD-1; 1798/7 BD-2; 1797 BD-3; 1797 BD-4. Construction of similar emission chains for the entire series is a necessity before estimated mintages for each variety can be determined.
Lightly abraded surfaces are consistent with the grade of this piece. Both sides of this greenish-gold representative have reflective fields that enhance the design motifs. The obverse of this late state example is cracked from the border to the bust through the final 7. Two parallel cracks have joined from the border to the bottom of this digit, but remain separated from the upright to the left serif. Both cracks continue through the serif toward the bust. A light crack joins the tops of most letters in UNITED, but there is no evidence of die lapping, meaning that this coin was struck immediately after the 1798 overdates were coined.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
