1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Large Letters XF40 PCGS. B-1, BB-73, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV to V. Warm gunmetal gray toning with delicate blue, violet, and golden-brown iridescent highlights. Both the obverse and reverse show excellent centering and full dentilation. U.S. coins with 16 obverse stars were produced for only a brief period of time at the Mint. The 16th star commemorates the admission of Tennessee as the 16th state to the Union. In 1798, the Mint returned to its custom of using only 13 obverse stars, perhaps because it was realized that as new states were added to the Union, the plethora of new stars would start to crowd out the other design elements. Excellent quality for the grade.
Ex: Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One (Heritage, 9/05), lot 3655, which realized $8,050.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
