1797<1/2 C> Plain Edge. C-3a, B-3c, R.3. Die State 1. AG3 NGC. AG3 EAC. Crowded date, low head; Triplet below ME. 83.3 grains. A pleasing example of the Low Head variety, with a device that pushes the date down to the border. This same die pair was used for the important 1797 Lettered Edge and Gripped Edge subvarieties. Apparently this is the early die state with a defect at Liberty's chin, sometimes called a wart. There is no evidence of die cracks that appear in later states, although the amount of wear makes an exact determination quite difficult. The obverse is essentially complete with bold date and LIBERTY, although weak at the right border. Considerable design outlines remain on the reverse, although STATES and RICA are mostly obliterated. Lightly abraded surfaces are actually much nicer than usual for the grade. Mostly pale green color on the obverse with some areas of lighter tan. The reverse is almost the opposite, mostly light tan with some pale green.
Ex: Richard Gross (3/12/1977). Envelope Included.
