1797 1/2 C Plain Edge, 1 Above 1 AU55 NGC. C-1, B-1, R.2. It is difficult to determine which planchet stock was used for this piece. Walter Breen had identified three different sources for the flans: rolled copper stock, cut-down "spoiled" large cents mint errors , and cut-down Talbot, Allum, & Lee tokens that were purchased by the Mint in 1795. This is a late die state example equivalent to Breen's State X. It appears to be rolled copper stock, an attribution that we suggest due to the abundance of tiny planchet marks in the fields. Had the planchet been struck earlier, cut-down, and struck again, chances of these flan marks surviving the dual operation is slim. The surfaces are attractive with medium brown color and lighter tan on the devices. Some minor mahogany patina is also visible. This is an exceptional example of the variety. Lot:5079
