1797<1/2 C> 1 Above 1. C-1, B-1, R.2. Die State 1--Environmental Damage--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. 1 Above 1; Leaf pair below ME. 80.6 grains. Both dies appear to be perfect without any cracks, bulges, or other defects. There is no visible evidence of the first obverse crack to appear on this die, from the end of the pole to the border. Perhaps a unique die blunder in American numismatics, with an almost perfectly formed and complete digit 1 entirely above the correctly positioned 1, its top just grazing the lowest hair curl. Tiny die defects above the other digits may represent traces of a complete date punched much too high in the die. Considering the distance between the top of the head and LIBERTY, it is almost surprising that there was still enough space to fit a complete 1 between the date and bust. Pleasing olive-brown and mahogany with traces of maroon color on the obverse, and minor verdigris on both surfaces. A couple small marks and abrasions are visible; the most prominent of these is located on Liberty's neck, just below the jaw.
Ex: Dill (11/17/1970). Envelope Included.
