1796<TOKEN> Myddelton Token, Copper PR62 Brown PCGS. Breen-1074. Philip Parry Price Myddelton was an Englishman owner of a sizeable tract of land in Kentucky, which had become a state in 1792. Myddelton planned to form a farming community there, comprised of English immigrants. He enlisted Matthew Boulton's private Soho Mint to produce pattern tokens in silver and copper. The Guide Book values both varieties equally, although the copper pieces are believed more rare. The pattern designs are generally acknowledged as artistically superior, and among the best of the various Early American issues. The Kentucky community never materialized, since Myddelton was jailed in England for his efforts. The present well struck piece has distributed minor marks, and is attractively toned in deeply blended olive, rose, and golden-brown shades. Listed on page 73 of the 2007 Guide Book.
