<B>1796 S$1 Small Date, Small Letters VF20 NGC.</B></I> B-1, BB-66, R.4. Die State II. Close date, 9 and 6 both lean slightly right; paired berries below left side of first S. The reverse die has been lapped in this die state. This reverse die was used for all four years of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design type, with a total of six different obverse dies including three of 1796. The same state of the reverse die, with evidence of lapping or resurfacing, appears on the 1797- and 1798-dated coins, suggesting that this 1796 B-1 die variety may have been struck in either of those later years. It is possible that this is really a "1798" silver dollar. Attractive pewter-gray surfaces with peripheral golden-brown toning. Lighter silver color highlights the devices on each side.
