<B>1796 S$1 Small Date, Small Letters Fine 15 NGC.</B></I> B-2, BB-63, R.4. Die State I. Wide date, digit 6 leans sharply left; paired berries below left side of first S. The earliest die state has a perfect, unlapped reverse. A splendid specimen with only the typical abrasions expected at this grade. The obverse is two-tone with pewter-gray color in the fields, accented by hints of pale gold toning at the border. The obverse devices have lighter silver color. The reverse is similar with less gray and more gold color, but lacks the two-tone contrast seen on the obverse. This variety may be approaching R.5 with only about 100 examples known. The reverse die was used for 1795 B-14, 1796 B-1, B-2, B-3, 1797 B-2, and 1798 B-2.
