<B>1796 S$1 Small Date, Large Letters VF35 PCGS.</B></I> B-4, BB-61, R.3. Die State I. Reiver State a. Serif of 1 far from curl; leaf tip joins left inside base of final A. The upper obverse details are mostly complete, the usual die state for this variety. Later die states have the top hair curls, especially at the forehead, weakened from die lapping. The forehead curl consists of three arcs attached at the top, but isolated in the field. Lovely gray-gold surfaces with a few minor scrapes on each side, not unusual for the grade, and not readily apparent. This variety is easily the most common of the year and is an excellent choice for date or type collectors. Several AU and Mint State examples are known, but like most early dollars, VF and XF are the most regularly seen grades. Despite its status as the most common silver dollar of the date, examples are not easily located. There are six different die varieties known for the 1796 silver dollars, and the current estimated combined population is less than 1,500 coins in all grades, despite higher published figures.
