<B>1796 S$1 Small Date, Large Letters AU58 NGC.</B></I> B-4, BB-61, R.3. A lightly toned honey-gold and powder-blue example with extensive luster and smooth, clean surfaces. The right reverse border exhibits minor adjustment marks, and slight rub is noted on the eagle's leg and belly, and on Liberty's cheek and drapery. The NGC Census is a little confused for this variety, since only in recent years have varieties been designated on NGC holders. NGC has certified two B-4 dollars as AU58 with one finer, and eight 1796 dollars of unknown variety (several among these are presumably B-5) with four finer. The only 1796 dollar graded finer than MS62 by NGC is a solitary MS63 B-5 (10/06). Meanwhile, PCGS has certified two Small Date, Large Letters pieces, with none finer. Although the exact place of the present piece within the Condition Census is unknown, it clearly ranks among the finest 1796 Small Date, Large Letters dollars, and is worthy of the finest specialized holding.
