1796 MEDAL Castorland Medal, Silver MS64 NGC. Followin 1796[MEDAL] Castorland Medal, Silver Original
1796<MEDAL> Castorland Medal, Silver Original MS64 NGC. Following the founding of the Revolutionary Tribunal in 1792, numerous families fled France for upper New York State. They chose a beaver (or castor in French) as the mascot of the proposed settlement. Before departing France, the trustee of the settlement persuaded the Paris Mint to strike silver ecus for the colonists. These pieces were taken to New York and placed into circulation. The settlement, christened Castorland, is now the town of Carthage, New York. The present example has die rust on the right vessel handle, and a die crack and bulge is noted near the S in PARENS. It was struck twice by the dies, with no rotation between strikes. The piece slightly expanded between strikes, with traces of legends from the initial strike located closer to the rim. The prooflike fields are only faintly marked, principally on the left reverse, and the strike is intricate throughout. Toned in pleasing golden-brown, dove-gray, and sky-blue colors. NGC (12/05) has certified just two examples, this piece and an XF40. Listed on page 73 of the 2006 Guide Book.
