1796 MEDAL Castorland Medal, Silver AU53 PCGS. Reeded Edge. Struck from the original dies. The dies are perfect near PARENS, and light die rust is seen near the vessel handle. According to Breen (1988), these attributes indicate that the present piece is an original striking (Breen-1058), or an early first restrike (Breen-1062). These are distinguished chiefly by weight, since Breen-1058 is about 45 grains heavier than Breen-1062. No weight is recorded on the PCGS insert. In either event, this is a very rare Early American souvenir of the ill-fated French immigrant Castorland community of upper New York, struck by the Paris Mint. A well struck deep cream-gray piece with light wear on the standing figure. There are no obtrusive marks. Listed on page 74 of the 2007 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
