1796 MEDAL Castorland Jeton, Silver PR63 Uncertified.
1796 MEDAL Castorland Jeton, Silver PR63 Uncertified.<p>Breen-1066. 223 grains (14.45 grams). Brilliant silver proof restrike from the original obverse die with a copy reverse die. ARGENT is stamped into the reeded edge, together with a Mint director's privy mark that cannot be deciphered (possibly a bee, which would indicate striking between 1860 and 1879). Breen states that brilliant proofs were made before 1900 and proofs made after that have a matte finish. This variety is listed in Breen but not in the Redbook, which only lists specimens from original dies and those from copy dies. However, when the reverse die became too damaged, some specimens were made using the original obverse with a copy die of the reverse. Modern copies use copy dies for both obverse and reverse.Ex: Wilmington Collection (NASCA-Karp, 10/84), lot 4490.From the David Bruce Collection.
