1796 Half Dime PCGS AU58
Half Dimes 1796 LIKERTY. Valentine-1. Draped Bust. Small Eagle. PCGS graded About Uncirculated 58. Utterly magnificent multicolor toning on both sides makes this a must-see coin for any serious numismatist who appreciates the beauty and quality of an early Small Eagle Half Dime. The color, as it often is, comes deepest at the edges, mostly blue but on the obverse blending into lovely sea-green and blue. From here the range broadens over the surfaces of both sides first into reds and magenta, then to warm sunset colors like gold -- while along the way other subtle nuances shimmer in the reflected glow. As to the strike, well, this is just about the sharpest, most perfect About Uncirculated 1796 Half Dime you will ever come across. It offers incredible detail in the hair and ribbon bow at the back of the head; has sharp drapery folds along the lower portion of Liberty's bust, and the rims have nice defect-free denticles. On the reverse, the eagle's eye can be made out, it's beak is sharp, and full feathers grace the wings and breast with only minor weakness at the very center of the breast. Here and there, beneath the color, one or two very faint old hairlines; also an ancient scratch at the tip of Liberty's bust but this in no way diminishes the beauty or overall quality and value of the piece. The variety with draped bust Liberty coupled with a small eagle reverse is found only in 1796-7, making this a two year Type. Inasmuch as mintage was slight (10,230 for the 1796, that is all), it stands to reason there would be very few survivors. In any grade this is a scarce coin. In high-end About Uncirculated such as we are offering here, the rarity plus the quality combines to make for a very appealing opportunity for bidders. Die variety (from the Breen reference encyclopedia): There are only two obverses dated 1796 for this denomination, both of which have been called overdates; the less scarce one (not an overdate) has also been touted as a purported blundered die, "LIKERTY," making three alleged types in all. If your 1796 has berry below E(D), it is the overdate; if the berry is below D, it is the other variety The "LIKERTY" is a later die state of the latter, with top and base of B weakened. Some of the 10,230 minted may have borne date 1795.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
