1796 H10C LIKERTY MS62 NGC. V-1, LM-1, R.3. While not actually a separate variety or an intentional creation in the early Mint, the 1796 LIKERTY half dime is, in reality, a latter die state of V-1. The "K" was created by heavy die polishing at the top and bottom of the B in LIBERTY. For collectors, this later die state represents a third variety for the year--along with one true overdate (V-2) and this variety (V-1) that has been called an overdate but is not. As with virtually all half dimes of this type, the central details are not completely defined. This is apparently a product of some fault in the device punches or in the press used for sinking the designs into the working dies. Otherwise, the surfaces are bright and lustrous with an overlay of crimson and lime-green toning on each side. A shallow diagonal scratch across the face of Liberty and another on her neck (both are well concealed by the toning) prevent a higher grade. One of the finest examples known of this popular variety.
