1796 Draped Large Cent PCGS AU50
Large Cents 1796 S-92 R3+ PCGS graded About Uncirculated-50. Draped Bust. Glossy olive brown with delicate overtones of sea-green, possibly from an old recoloring. There is a small spot of darker olive toning high on the neck under the earlobe, a very light bruise on the rim left of the hair ribbon, and a tiny rim nick at IC in AMERICA. The fields show many tiny planchet chips that didn't completely strike out, which is typical of the planchets used for these early cents. Nicely centered and well struck. Sharp and very attractive in spite of the minor defects. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with multiple sets of sharp die clashmarks on both sides. There is a bold double profile from the forelock down to the eye and on TY in LIBERTY. Called net VF35 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#6. We'll call it net EF40, which should please almost everyone. Ex Dr. James O. Sloss, Abe Kosoff 10/21/59:31-R. E. Naftzger, Jr.-Myles Z. Gerson-Dr. Dane B. Nielsen-Dr. Philip W. Ralls-R. S.
