1796 Draped Bust 25C NGC MS61
Among the major Types required for a Type set, the 1796 quarter basks in the spotlight as a distinguished rarity. Among those left in existence out of the original 6,146 production, relatively few can equal or exceed the originality offered here. Moreover, the present piece has nice surfaces for the grade, original patina from years of careful preservation, and a nice connection with a numismatic history: who can challenge its qualifications? The present Mint State 1796 quarter will deservedly attract wide attention as it crosses the auction block -- for it is indeed beautiful.

A one-year Type, the 1796 has a draped bust of Liberty facing right, eight stars behind the portrait, seven facing, for a total of 15 (the only star count used on the quarter dollar, unlike other denominations of this design type). LIBERTY is above, the date 1796 is below. On the reverse a small eagle is within a wreath made of laurel on one side and what looks to be a palm branch on the other, gathered together with a ribbon bow at the bottom. The dentils are long and prominent, a distinguishing feature of this year's coinage only. (#5310)
