1796 50C 15 Stars XF40 PCGS. O-101, R.5. The 15 stars
1796<50C> 15 Stars XF40 PCGS. O-101, R.5. The 15 stars half dollars were coined before Tennessee joined the Union on June 1, 1796, as the 16th state, although in reality none of the 1796 half dollars were delivered in 1796. The eight stars on the left are well spaced, yet the seven stars on the right are quite crowded, and most touch, or nearly so. This coin is a second example of this celebrated type in this sale, although in a lesser condition than the illustrious Eliasberg specimen of the O-101.
This example has problem-free, medium-gray surfaces with copper-gold highlights. Considerable muted mint luster clings to the surfaces, which were probably prooflike at one time like many specimens, and is visible when the coin is rotated at the right angle beneath a light. The color is medium silver-gray, with amber and copper accents abundant on each side. The diagnostic die crack from the rim at 3 o'clock that joins stars 13 through 15 is bold, passing through the bust to make a 90-degree turn and rejoin the rim at 5 o'clock. Another die crack that joins the first crack, visible on higher-grade specimens, is faintly visible on this coin. It runs from below the lowest neck curl down onto the drapery, and is bold at the middle fold in the drapery.
There are few mentionable abrasions, although a small tick to the left of the denominator is mentioned for accuracy. There are some light adjustment marks noted on each side. The strike is well executed, with good detail on Liberty's hair, and the usual softness in the center of the eagle's breast. The N in UNITED is a bit weak, and the 1/2 fraction is softly struck, although easily visible. The date and all other peripheral elements are bold. Expect spirited bidding. Population: 3 in 40, 11 finer (7/06).
