1796 50C 15 Stars VF35 PCGS. O-101, R.5. The mintage figures for 1796 were included with those for 1797, with the total given for both years as a paltry 3,918 pieces. Two varieties were produced in 1796, one with an obverse that had 15 stars (struck before Tennessee's admission to the Union) and one with 16 stars on the obverse (struck after Tennessee was admitted as the 16th state). It was Breen's belief that the 60 Half Dollars the Philadelphia Mint delivered to the Bank of the United States on February 28, 1797, and some of the 874 pieces delivered on March 21 of the same year, were produced from the 1796-dated obverse die with 15 stars. The obverse of this piece is somewhat better defined than the reverse with good definition on the lower hair curls and peripheral stars. The reverse is well detailed around the margins but the eagle has borne the brunt of the time this piece spent in circulation (but it is still consistent with the VF35 grade). Each side is attractively toned with gray patina that displays a light undertone of rose. Lightly abraded with no obvious or distracting marks on either side. Population: 1 in 35, 9 finer (10/02).
