1796 50C 15 Stars--Tooled, Whizzed--ANACS. Fine 15 Details. O-101, R.5. The 1796 half dollar comes in two varieties: the first displays 15 stars on the obverse (Overton-101), and the second shows 16 stars (Overton-102). The two 1796 issues, along with 1797-dated half dollars, are part of the famed Draped Bust, Small Eagle design type. Collectors seeking to complete a type set of U.S. coinage place tremendous price pressure on this low-mintage series (3,918 pieces). Consequently, even "impaired" specimens bring strong prices. An NCS Fine Details, Repaired, Whizzed 1796 15 Stars coin, for example, realized $37,260 in our October 2006 Dallas Signature Auction.
The present Fine 15 Details specimen displays light to medium gray surfaces that have been lightly whizzed. The design elements are well centered on the planchet, and exhibit relatively strong definition. The diagnostic crack from the obverse rim at 5 o'clock travels through the drapery and stars 15, 14, and 13 before returning to the rim. Some unobtrusive circulation marks on each side are mentioned for complete accuracy, but we can find no direct evidence of tooling. All in all, this is a fairly nice example of this tough type coin, the ANACS disclaimers notwithstanding.
From The Hoosier Discovery Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
