1796<50C> 15 Stars--Repaired, Whizzed--NCS. Fine Details. O-101, R.5. The Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar is a two-year type coin that bears either a 1796 or 1797 date. The 1796 15-stars die was likely prepared prior to Tennessee's June 1, 1796 admission to the Union as the 16th state, that was then commemorated by a 1796-dated 16-stars issue. Interestingly, all 3,918 1796 and 1797 half dollars were, according to Mint records, struck in 1797. Walter Breen (1988) theorizes that the 60 coins delivered to the Bank of the United States in February 1797, and an unknown number of the 874 pieces delivered to the Bank in March, were produced from the 1796 15 star die.
This particular coin shows good details for the grade. Each side is mostly untoned in the center with deeper, russet-golden patina around the margin. The right side of both the obverse and the reverse have been repaired and smoothed. The coin was then whizzed. Still, a 1796 half and with this degree of remaining details this piece will undoubtedly be of interest to a number of collectors of early type.
