1796/5 $5 Small Eagle AU53 NGC.
1796/5 $5 Small Eagle AU53 NGC. Breen-6418, B. 9-I, Miller-16, R.5. The lone die pairing used in the second year of Half Eagle production, and a very scarce item in any grade. It has been four years since we last sold an example of this early gold rarity, and in fact the 1796/5 from our 2000 FUN Sale was this exact coin. Even though the mintage of 6,196 pieces is not substantially less than the 1795, the 1796/5 Five Dollar is a much more elusive issue. This example is well struck through the centers and retains much semi-reflective luster about the devices. The surfaces are a mixture of green-gold and pale orange, with a barely detectable alloy stain adjacent to star 2. Population: 3 in 53, 16 finer (11/03). Ex: 2000 FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/00), lot 7690, where it realized $18,975. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
