1796/5 $5 Bust. Sm Eagle NGC MS60
1796/5 $5 Capped Bust. Small eagle. NGC graded MS60. The desirable first-year issue with a small eagle reverse. Sharply struck including on the eagle's head and neck; Liberty's hair and the eagle's breast feathers are also exceptionally well defined on this Mint State example. The green-gold surfaces are very smooth and merit your consideration because they are so free from the usual streaks or abrasions; there is even a trace of semi-reflective quality. Very high quality for this desirable, early gold type (NGC holder #651223-001.)

There were two major Types of the 1795 capped bust right half eagle: small eagle and large or "heraldic" eagle. Some may not yet know it but the latter is a backdated issue struck sometime around 1798. The former, with its small eagle format, was delivered in 1795 as the first gold coin minted under authority of the Coinage Act of 1792. The 1795 small eagles are actually one of the more easily acquired early $5 gold pieces if you have the money, a fact that points to greater than usual preservation at the time of issue. But do not be fooled that this issue is easy to acquire in choice condition. The facts lean in the other direction: collectors of first-year Types will have a challenge to bid for the honor of owning this attractive Mint State coin.
