1796 25C XF45 NGC. B-1, R.6. The rare 'Low 6' Brow
1796 25C XF45 NGC. B-1, R.6. The rare 'Low 6' Browning variety for the year, which is decidedly more rare than the only other die pairing for the year, which features the top of the 6 in the date very close to the bust. As of (1/05), NGC has certified only three pieces as Browning-1 (all in Very Fine grades), although the present example is not designated by variety on its older generation NGC holder.
The 1796 Quarter Dollar is a famous rarity in American numismatics. Excluding the extremely rare 1792 pattern, which was struck in copper or white metal but not silver, the 1796 is the initial issue of the denomination, and its production was limited to a mere 6,146 pieces. Silver depositors determined the denominations struck during the early years of the United States Mint, and since large denominations were more convenient to store and transport, depositors generally preferred Silver Dollars. As a result, no further Quarters were produced until 1804, by which time the Heraldic Eagle reverse was standard for silver denominations. The 1796 is important not only for its historical significance, but it represents the sole issue of the Small Eagle reverse for the Quarter denomination.
The present example has the expected moderate wear on Liberty's cheek and shoulder and on the eagle's breast, but the hair tresses and wing plumage are quite sharp. The medium golden-brown and sea-green colors also provide attractive eye appeal. Close examination reveals a somewhat glossy texture, and personal inspection of this lot is suggested for prospective bidders. Lot:6507
