1796 25C XF40 PCGS. B-2, R.3. Authorized by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792, the Quarter was not, however, produced until 1796. A mere 6,146 pieces were produced in the latter year, after which production was halted again until 1804. Despite its first-year status and obviously limited mintage, the 1796 is, perhaps, more widely heralded as a one-year type. The obverse was designed by Robert Scot and it depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing right with the word LIBERTY at the top, the date 1796 below, and 15 stars on either side. The reverse, credited to John Eckstein, displays a small eagle perched atop clouds within a wreath of olive and palm branches. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the periphery. There are two known die marriages of the 1796 Quarter: B-1 displays a low 6 in the date; B-2 displays a high 6 in the date. When Colonel E. H. R. Green's hoard of 1796 Quarters was dispersed, it was discovered that 90% of the coins were of the B-2 die marriage (obviously, the more common of the two). We do not know the prior pedigree of the present example, but we are certain that it will have little trouble finding its way into a high grade circulated type set. Both sides displays uncommonly sharp definition for the type as well as the grade, although diagnostic softness of detail over the eagle's head is noted. There are few abrasions, and the toning is a deep, rich, lavender-gray shade. Accuracy compels us to mention an area of disturbance in the lower left obverse field, where a pinscratch is also evident. From the Ohio Collection.
