1796<25C> VF20 NGC. B-2, R.3. The 1796 quarter is a one-year type coin, and as such is necessary for the completion of a type set of U.S. coinage. Only 6,146 pieces were coined from two obverse dies and a single reverse die. The first obverse (Browning 1) has a low 6 in the date, the TY in LIBERTY touch at the top, and star 15 almost touches the drapery. In Browning 2, the 6 is high, nearly touching the bust, the TY in LIBERTY do not touch at the top, and star 15 is twice as far from the drapery as that in B-1.
The example in this lot, the more common B-2 variety, displays the usually seen well centered motifs and bold dentilation on both sides. Whispers of electric-blue, lavender, and golden-gray toning overlay semi-bright surfaces that reveal a few circulation marks that would be expected on a 200 year old coin. No adjustment marks are evident. The level of detail on the design elements is well commensurate with the assigned grade. An excellent specimen that will fit comfortably into a mid-grade type collection.
