1796 25C --Plugged--NCS. Fine Details. B-2, R.3. This one-year-type comes in two varieties that share the same reverse. The B-2 variety of the coin in this lot is confirmed by a high 6 in the date that is very near, but does not touch, the bust, and in LIBERTY, the T and Y do not touch at the top.
According to mint records (Bullion Journal A, National Archives), only 6,146 pieces were coined in four batches: 1,800 coins were delivered April 9, 1796 per warrant 6; another 2,530 pieces were delivered May 27, 1796 under Warrant 63; 1,564 specimens were in a June 14, 1796 delivery per Warrant 65; and the remaining 252 coins were delivered on February 28, 1797 under Warrant 81.
Finely hairlined surfaces on this coin display light to medium gray toning, and relatively strong Fine details, especially in the mid and lower potion of Liberty's hair and the internal part of the eagle's wings. The design elements are well centered on the planchet, and most of the obverse dentilation is strong, as is typical for the type. The coin appears to have been plugged at 12 o'clock on the obverse, with the E in LIBERTY expertly repaired; the plug's outline can barely be discerned below the bowknot on the reverse. Some repair also appears to have been attempted at the left reverse rim. A 1796 quarter is necessary for the completion of a U.S. type set.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
