1796 25C MS63 PCGS. B-2, R.3. An exceptionally well produced example, the staff at the Philadelphia Mint expertly centered the planchet between the dies. The result is a coin that displays full denticles around both sides that are virtually all equal in dimension. The central striking definition is no less worthy of praise. One can appreciate essentially full detail over the obverse bust and star centrils, and the reverse devices are appreciably sharp with the exception of noticeable bluntness on the eagle's head and a few of the surrounding leaves in the wreath. Now for the surface preservation, which is also significant for the issue. There is no trace of wear, nor can we find any outwardly distracting handling marks. Both sides are deeply toned in charcoal colored patina, but we do note considerably brighter undertones at direct angles. This coin may be one of the 200 or so Uncirculated 1796 Draped Bust Quarters that were once owned by the eccentric Colonel E.H.R. Green. Most of Green's coins were examples of the B-2 die marriage, and, while approximately half were prooflike in finish, half were not. The appearance of this coin closely matches the description of the MS63 PCGS B-2 example that appeared as lot 343 in our March 1993 Early Spring ANA Bullet Auction. As we do not have an image of that coin, we cannot say for certain if the two examples are one and the same. Nevertheless, this is certainly one of the most significant Quarter offerings in this sale, and it is a coin that will form the centerpiece of any Mint State type collection.
