1796<25C> Good 4 PCGS. High 6. B-2, R.3. Just 6,146 quarters were struck in 1796, the first year of production for this denomination and a one-year type coin. While the Draped Bust obverse design continued from 1804 through 1807, all of those issues had the Heraldic Eagle reverse rather than this Small Eagle design. Two die varieties are known from different obverse dies, identified by either a Low 6 (the 6 centered between bust and border) or a High 6 (the 6 much closer to the bust). The High 6 coins, such as this example, are more plentiful. This is a pleasing example for the grade. The obverse has full borders with all details outlined and visible. The reverse has partial border details with much of the design outlined, although the left branch of the wreath is weakly defined. Light silvery-gray devices with slightly deeper gray color in the fields and pale gold toning near the borders.
