1796<25C>--Damaged--ANACS. Good 4 Details. B-2, R.3. A slight depression on the obverse center is accompanied by parallel vertical scuffs. A few faint obverse pinscratches are of lesser interest. Moderately toned in cream-gray colors, with hints of deeper lilac hues near the rims. The date is bold, LIBERTY and UNITED are faint. Famous as a one-year type, the 1796 is the only date with a Small Eagle reverse, and is the only date struck during the initial ten years of mint operation. Silver Dollars were the denomination of choice in the late 1790s, and depositors of bullion at the Federal mint simply did not want Quarters in return, as their smaller size and greater count made them less convenient.
