<B>1796 25C --Cleaned, Adjustment Marks--ANACS. AU58 Details.</B></I> Low 6. B-1, R.5. The ANACS holder also notes that this piece has adjustment marks, and they are found across much of the reverse. Two varieties of 1796 are known, and they are easily distinguished by the position of the 6, either high and touching the drapery, or low, about centered between the bust and border. The Low 6 variety is considered R.5 today, with about 45 to 60 examples known. Earlier, Robert Hilt believed that about 25 pieces had survived, and Walter Breen presented a roster of 17 coins that grade XF or finer in his revision of the Browning reference. This is the first year of issue for the denomination, and it is also a one year type coin. The Draped Bust obverse was the work of Robert Scot and John Smith Gardner, after designs by Gilbert Stuart. The Small Eagle reverse design was used on various denominations for a brief period of time in the 1790s, but it was quickly replaced by the Large or Heraldic Eagle design that continued through much of the first decade of the 19th century. In addition to the adjustment marks, this piece has light hairlines and numerous tiny surface marks on both sides. The fields are satiny and reflective, almost prooflike in appearance. This example has been cleaned and now has a bright silver appearance with no toning. It is sharply struck with excellent detail on both sides. The eagle’s head is flat, but it is completely outlined.
