The more difficult of the two known die pairings for the 1796 Quarter, which is the only date of the Small Eagle type, and one of the most difficult silver type coins to acquire. The 1796 is also important as the first Quarter issue, excluding the non-collectible 1792 patterns. This wavy and faintly hairlined representative has a slate-gray reverse, while the obverse is adorned with iridescent lemon, apple-green, and ruby-red tints. Liberty's hair has pleasing definition, and heavy wear is only found on a portion of the obverse rim at 5:30. 1796 quarters of either variety in any condition are highly desirable, and a Browning-1 with bold borders and clear types merits bidder attention.
