1796 25C AU58 NGC. B-1, R.6. This variety is characterized by the lower 6 in the date, and is the scarcer of the two varieties of this year. The dies for the 1796 Quarter were engraved by Robert Scot and John Smith Gardner, based upon designs by Gilbert Stuart and John Eckstein. Numerous high grade examples (especially of the B-2) came onto the market in the early 1940s from the Colonel Green estate. This is a wonderfully prooflike coin that is very sharply struck on most of the design elements, except, of course, on the head of the eagle. The surfaces are mostly brilliant with just a smidgen of golden color on each side. A few small abrasions are scattered over both the obverse and reverse, but none are large enough to merit individual mention. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
