The 1796 No Stars, one of only 963 pieces minted, is one of the few transcendent rarities in U.S. coinage that is well known outside the circle of gold specialists. It is a one-year type coin that has a distinctive design unlike any subsequent quarter eagle (which all have stars), it is the first date of the denomination, it is the first issue to ever showcase a heraldic eagle on the reverse, and it is the first coin struck with sixteen reverse stars honoring Tennessee's admission to the Union.<BR>Unfortunately, this piece has a lot of disclaimers that are attached to it, the most prominent being the crudely repaired plug at the top of the obverse. Apprentice-like tooling work is seen on Liberty's cap, the BER of LIBERTY, and the eagle's tail feathers. The surfaces are heavily polished as this coin was probably used as a jewelry piece at one time. Still, a worthwhile, affordable example of this important gold offering.<BR><I>From The Dr. Douglas Roane Collection.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/01/1991</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$14,300.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
