1796 $2 1/2 No Stars--Obverse Repaired, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Breen-1, Breen-6113, Bass-3002, BD-2, High R.4. The key identifier of this variety is that the arrowheads extend just about to the end of N of UNITED. This coin has three distinctions. It is the first precious-metal coin without stars issued for circulation by the United States prior to 1836; it is the first to show the heraldic eagle; and is the earliest made showing 16 reverse stars, apparently honoring Tennessee's admission to the Union.
Peach-gold surfaces are imbued with wisps of orange and light green, and reveal fine inoffensive hairlines, especially on the obverse. The design elements retain fairly nice detail; most of E PLURIBUS UNUM is strong, as are the eagle's wing feathers. A repair appears to have been made at the lower left obverse rim. All in all, a decent one-year type coin, despite the NCS disclaimer.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
