1796 1C Liberty Cap MS61 Brown NGC. S-81, Low R.3. According to Walter Breen (Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents: 1793-1814, 2000) approximately 21,000-22,000 1796 Liberty Cap Cents of the Sheldon-81 die marriage were produced. These were thought to have been delivered sometime between April 18 and May 10, 1796. The impressive survivor that we are offering in this lot possesses rich reddish-brown patina that is pleasingly even in distribution. The impression is well centered on the planchet and overall bold in appearance. We do, however, note some lack of detail over the left borders, the highpoints of Liberty's portrait, the N in UNITED, the ENT in CENT, and the ribbon bow. Softness of detail in the latter three areas is suggestive of die failure--a feature that is not uncommon for the reverses of S-81 Cents. There are a few abrasions here and there, most notably on the reverse over the word CENT, but neither side reveals any bothersome spots. The 17th edition (2/28/2001) of Copper Quotes by Robinson, which uses EAC grading standards, does not list a Condition Census example of this variety finer than AU55.
