Our EAC Grade VF25.</B></I><BR><BR><B>Equivalents.</B></I> Gilbert 34; McGirk 6F; Clapp-Newcomb 27; EAC 35; <I>Encyclopedia</B></I> 1690; PCGS #1401.<BR><BR><B>Variety. </B></I>Hyphen die chip between 7 and 9. Reverse of 1795. Triplet at T of CENT. The obverse appears on S-93, S-94, S-95, S-96, NC-2, and NC-3. The reverse appears on S-95.<BR><BR><B>Surfaces.</B></I> The sharpness grade is about XF40, with hard, light olive surfaces that are affected by minor, old corrosion on each side although the color is even across each side, and the overall appearance is still pleasing. Bland records sharpness of XF45 with a 10-point surface deduction, and Noyes gives it XF40 sharpness with a 20-point surface deduction. The real grade is sharpness of XF40 with a 15-point deduction.<BR><BR><B>Die State I. </B></I>Minor obverse clash marks, similar to those found on late states of S-93.<BR><BR><B>Appearances. </B></I>The obverse and reverse are illustrated in Noyes (2007).<BR><BR><B>Census.</B></I> This piece is tied with one other coin for fourth finest known, but it stands in solitary third place among those in collectors' hands. The finer examples, according to Noyes, are an XF45 in the ANS Collection, the XF40 Whitney coin sold by Stack's in 1999, and a VF35 in the Fred Borcherdt Collection. The present piece is tied with another coin in the ANS. Bland records a similar placement for each coin, but slightly different grades.<BR><BR><B>Commentary.</B></I> Breen presented a different emission order than Sheldon, recording S-93 between S-94 and S-95.<BR><BR><B>Provenance.</B></I> <I>Dr. William H.
