1796<10C> XF40 NGC. JR-6, R.3. This variety is sometimes called the "hyphenated date," as all examples have a die crack through the digits 179 of the date. This is obviously a later die state and the crack is quite heavy through the top of the 7. This design type was only struck for two years, with a combined output for both years of less than 48,000 pieces. This is a popular mid-grade example that will appeal to a large number of type, date, and variety collectors. The surfaces overall display medium density gray-olive toning with a strong underlying presence of rose, while the devices retain a significant portion of original brilliance. An attractive and problem-free example of this first-year type coin.
Ex: Kosoff Sale (Bowers and Merena, 11/85), lot 1275.
